The Power of Reading

"Night John" (1996)
Based on the novel written by Gary Paulsen, starring Carl Lumbly + Allison Jones + Gabriel Casseus. Imagine if you didn't have the power of reading... we tend to forget how important it is sometimes.

The Giuseppi Logan Quintet

What a great surprise. Legendary Giuseppi Logan releases his first recording in 45 years (on Tompkins Square Label). Logan only recorded two albums in the mid 60's with Don Pullen, Eddie Gomez and Milford Graves for ESP. He returns with his distinctive tone and intact approach to all 8 songs (5 original compositions and 3 standards) as if he picked up where he had left off over 40 years ago. Also He was recently featured in the documentary film "Water in the Boat" where his street performances provide the soundtrack to the film. Enough said, it's just nice to hear him play again.

A Centennial Celebration‎

The pianist Mary Lou Williams would have been 100 years old today. She was a great performer, composer, educator and humanitarian. I always admire her strength in playing and swingin' left hand! Happy birthday.

Can't believe it has been 10 years since his sophomore album, Voodoo. He was fearless on all 13 songs exploring new sonic possibilities. Supposedly he will be returing soon with his 3rd, James River...

BLACKsummers' night

After a few listens it grew on me more and more. Maxwell's first album since his 8-year hiatus. Yes, he is back. Comes classy and stays true to his sound, unlike many R&B singers nowadays. iTunes

Howard Zinn, RIP (1922-2010)

The Peoples' History of the United States regards the entire history of America as a Marxist style class struggle between the oppressors and the oppressed. These conflicts include White European settlers against Native Americans, blacks against slavers, labor unionists against capitalists, and women against the patriarchy. Among the villains in his narrative are Christopher Columbus, the founding fathers, most if not all of the presidents of the United States, and anyone who ever started a large business, including John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie.

Thank you for your great work. May he rest in peace.
